2. Pharmacology:
Pharmacokinetics: Poorly absorbed in the small intestine; metabolized by colonic bacteria to lactic acid and other organic acids.
Mechanism of Action:
Increases osmotic pressure in the colon → retains water → softens stool.
Acidifies colonic content → converts NH₃ to NH₄⁺ → reduces systemic absorption of ammonia (useful in liver disease).
