1. Introduction

Arpiwise 5 contains aripiprazole 5 mg, classified as an atypical antipsychotic. It is known as a dopamine-serotonin system stabilizer.

2. Indications (Uses)

• Schizophrenia (adults and adolescents)

• Bipolar I disorder – acute manic and mixed episodes

• Maintenance treatment of bipolar disorder

• Adjunct treatment in major depressive disorder (MDD)

• Irritability in autistic disorder

• Sometimes used in Tourette’s disorder

3. Mechanism of Action

Aripiprazole has a unique action compared to other antipsychotics:

• Partial agonist at D2 receptors → reduces excess dopamine (in psychosis) while maintaining normal levels

• Partial agonist at 5-HT1A receptors → improves mood and anxiety

• Antagonist at 5-HT2A receptors → helps reduce psychotic symptoms

This dual action reduces side effects like severe sedation and weight gain compared to some other antipsychotics.
